About Anne Frank

[Портрет Анны Франк]

Annelies Marie "Anne" Frank (12 June 1929 – February or March 1945) was a German-Dutch diarist of Jewish heritage. One of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust, she gained fame posthumously with the 1947 publication of The Diary of a Young Girl (originally Het Achterhuis in Dutch, meaning "The Secret Annex"), in which she documents her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944, during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II.

Her diary is one of the world's best-known books and has been the basis for several plays and films. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, she lived most of her life in or near Amsterdam, Netherlands, having moved there with her family at the age of four and a half when the Nazis gained control over Germany.

Anne's story provides a unique perspective on the horrors of war and persecution, and her words continue to resonate with people of all ages around the globe.

The Secret Annex (Het Achterhuis)

The Secret Annex was the hiding place of Anne Frank, her family, and four other Jewish people during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. It was located in the back of her father Otto Frank's company building at Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam.

For over two years, the inhabitants of the Secret Annex lived in constant fear of discovery. Anne Frank documented their daily lives, thoughts, and feelings in her diary. The entrance to the Annex was concealed behind a movable bookcase.

Today, the Anne Frank House museum preserves the Secret Annex, allowing visitors to experience the confined space where Anne wrote her diary and to reflect on the events that transpired there.
